The Walled Garden

In a world where everything moves too fast, where anxiety disorders are the world’s most common mental disorders, we can still find some sanctuaries where we can escape from the stresses and strains of modern life. Gardens have always been serene retreats that positively impact mental well-being and nurture our souls.

Since a few months ago, we have been lucky enough to welcome a team of enthusiastic local volunteers who help us with the upkeep, development and conservation of our kitchen garden. So much work has been done and we are deeply grateful for their precious support. A huge thanks to Simon, Oksana, Laura and Kat, for their enthusiasm and commitment, and for using their skills, sharing their ideas, and taking care so well of the garden.

If you have a few hours to spare each week and want to help them care for our beautiful walled garden, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteering with us could be a wonderful way to share your skills, your passions, and to make new friends as well. Gardening experience is not necessary but would be helpful.

Testimonials:

“I have never volunteered in a garden before, but I love gardening and growing flowers, to use as cut flowers and for drying. When I saw the walled garden, my jaw dropped!  Obviously not many of us are privileged enough to have a walled garden, and growing in one is very exciting. Walled gardens are protected and create a mini climate in which you can let your imagination go wild. Growing in this beautiful place is special, because we all love sharing our gardens with others and growing in the walled garden is really all about sharing. You know that the visitors of the Abbey will walk around the place and stumble along the calendula, dill, amaranth you’ve planted, and will admire it, smell it, and even take a little nibble. It’s a very giving place. And it’s amazing to feel like you are a part of the history of a place that has been around for centuries.  And let’s face it, gardeners are the coolest people there are!  You will meet some nicest people, who will totally get your excitement about all things plant related. Being a volunteer in this garden, is fully supported and always appreciated by Pascaline.”  Oksana

“I visited the Abbey for an open day about a year before volunteering and was so impressed by the walled garden, its history and its huge potential! It’s a magical setting in the middle of the village, so peaceful and a place I just felt drawn to spend more time in. As an enthusiastic amateur gardener, the opportunity to join as a volunteer was the perfect fit! I get to use my skills, meet likeminded volunteers and share our knowledge and ideas. The flexibility works so well for me too, as a super busy working parent I can’t always commit to the exact same volunteering times every week, but I’m always really glad when I can fit a few hours into my weekend. It’s good to give something back to the local community and I would recommend volunteering at the abbey garden to anyone who’s interested in getting involved.” Laura
