Bede Griffiths and The Abbey Sutton Courtenay
October 26, 2024 @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Adrian Rance-McGregor, a former director and Chair of Trustees at The Abbey, will give a talk on the life and legacy of Bede Griffiths.
This talk will explore his early experience of the mystical reality that lies behind everything, how we went to India to ‘find the other half of my soul, and how he opens the way to a radically new encounter with the Christian revelation in Jesus Christ through the spirituality and philosophy of the Indian Vedic tradition. His great work was the ‘Marriage of East and West’ both within the Church and within the individual person.
The late cardinal Basil Hume described Bede Griffiths as a ‘mystic in touch with absolute beauty and love’. Fr Bede came to The Abbey to bless it and its work at the invitation of Stephen Verney soon after The Abbey opened its doors as the New Era Centre.
Fr Bede believed that a new era would emerge in which communities of people committed to the renewal of contemplative life would play a vital role. His ‘new vision of reality’ tells us something of how this new era will emerge, and its relevance to the life of The Abbey.
